KUCHING: A sixth rabies case involving a seven-year-old boy has emerged in Sarawak.

The State Disaster Management Committee said the boy from Kampung Kuala in Gedong, Serian division was bitten by a dog on June 17.

He was given three doses of anti-rabies vaccine on July 21, 24 and 28 at Serian Hospital, with a fourth dose scheduled on Aug 4.

"However, on Aug 1 he began to experience fever, began coughing and vomiting and was warded in Serian Hospital," the committee said in a statement on Tuesday.

The committee added that the boy was referred to the Sarawak General Hospital on Aug 3 after his condition deteriorated.

The boy is currently in critical condition and has been put on a ventilator.

A sample was sent for a test on Tuesday and came back positive for rabies the same day, the committee said.

Five previous cases in the state resulted in fatalities last month.

So far, 22 areas in Serian, Sri Aman and Kuching divisions have been declared as rabies infected.

Mass vaccination of dogs continues to be carried out by the state Veterinary Services Department.

The Health Department advised those who have been bitten by dogs from April 1 to go for a check-up at the nearest medical facility.
