KUCHING: The Sarawak government has declared Kampung Kuala in Serian a rabies-infected area after a boy from the village contracted the disease.

The State Disaster Management Committee said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah made the declaration on Wednesday.

This brings the number of rabies-infected areas in the state to 23, comprising 19 in the Serian division, three in Kuching and one in Sri Aman.

The seven-year-old boy from Kampung Kuala was confirmed as the sixth rabies victim in Sarawak on Tuesday.

He was bitten by a dog on June 17 and is currently warded at the Sarawak General Hospital in critical condition.

The committee said that the Sarawak Veterinary Services Department sent two surveillance teams to Kampung Kuala to monitor the situation and take samples.

It said the department vaccinated 504 dogs on Wednesday, comprising 74 in the Serian division and 430 in 11 villages in Lundu district.

Meanwhile the state Health Department registered 115 new dog bites cases on Wednesday. Of the total, 99 involved household pets while the rest came from stray animals.

The department reminded the public to take steps to avoid getting bitten.

Those who are bitten should wash the wound immediately with soap and water for 15 minutes and seek medical treatment.
